INTELLIGENCE-George Pallath
The old concept about intelligence has gone through a sea change in recent times. During our child hood, we know of only one type of intelligence. If a student is good at studies, solving mathematical problems and gets good marks, that child is considered intelligent. Only students of academic brilliance are considered intelligent.
Now the experts in the field of child development and education are of the opinion that there are 7 different types of intelligence. It is very rare indeed to find people who are intelligent in all these types. At best they will be intelligent in two or three of them.
The seven types of intelligence are:-
1) Verbal Intelligence:- People who are good writers, speakers, lawyers etc who are proficient in language skills are considered verbally intelligent.
2) Logical and Mathematical intelligence:- some are good at solving complex mathematical problems and good at thinking logically. They are logically or mathematically intelligent. Eg:- Einstein, Aryabhatta, Ramanujan.
3) Musical intelligence:- Some are good at understanding and mastering pitch, rhythm and tone of music. They make good musicians, singers, composers etc. K.J Yesudas, R.D Burman, Balabhaskar.
4) Kinesthetic intelligence:- People having good muscle, eye coordination, good reflex, eyesight and who are athletic fall into this category. Eg:- Sachin Tendulkar, Roger Federer etc.
5) Visual and spatial:- People who have the power of imagination, who are good at visualizing, like artists, sculpture, architect
6) Intra Personal intelligence:- Some people are very good at interacting with the people at large, controlling a crowd, public speaking, controlling the public at large through their power of persuasion , charisma and choice of words. Eg:- John F Kennedy, Nehru, Hitler,
7) Interpersonal intelligence:- Some people have an uncanny way of creating good relationships. Dealing with people, leaving a good impression at the very first meeting, making friends. They are good at socializing.
It is very uncommon to see all these intelligence rolled into one person. Many of us have maybe two or three of the above mentioned intelligence at a higher level. If we are able to identify the kind of intelligence that our kids have and if they are able to find a career, vocation or profession where the specific intelligence can be used, they will be able to enjoy and excel in what they are intelligent at and not waste their time in doing something in which they are not intelligent at all.
